The Best Time to Renovate Your Kitchen
If you’ve made the decision to renovate your kitchen and you’ve got a few ideas in mind for the design and budget, you’re probably now wondering when is the best time to do it. It’s always a difficult decision to make – do you renovate in winter when it’s cold outside so your kitchen will be ready for summer, or do you renovate in summer when you can replace your indoor appliances with an outdoor grill for a while? To help you decide, here are a few factors to consider if you’re wondering when the best time is to renovate your kitchen.
Supply and Demand
You may not know this already, but there is a constant battle between supply and demand. This causes the price of materials to fluctuate, which can significantly hurt your budget if you buy when the market isn’t in your favour. It’s always best to plan your project well in advance and keep an eye on the prices of materials. The rates usually follow a fairly predictable pattern, so even if your project doesn’t begin for a few months, if you can buy your materials at a very good price, it’s worth doing so and storing them until you start to renovate to save you a lot of money.
Just like in everyday life, certain times of year are better than others when it comes to contractor availability. During the busy periods, your contractor will likely be juggling several other jobs so there’s an increased chance that they may not be completely focused. The flip side of this is that you may not be able to find a contractor to complete your renovation as they’ll be so busy juggling other projects that they may not be able to fit you in. It’s worth scheduling your kitchen renovation for a couple of months before the busy period. This way, you’ll be more likely to get the contractor you want and you can get your project in motion before things get crazy.
While the season can affect when you conduct home renovations, it doesn’t really matter when it comes to your kitchen. Since the work is being done indoors, the weather doesn’t really impact the work. Rather, you should think about when it best suits you to renovate and when is most convenient. For example, you’ll inevitably have to live without a kitchen for a little while when it’s being installed. If you do the work in the summer, you can create a makeshift kitchen outside and use the BBQ grill instead while your stove is being fitted. This is also doable in the winter, but it may be a little more uncomfortable if you’re the one doing the grilling outdoors! If you have kids, you need to consider whether it’s better to undergo renovations while they’re at school (but when you have lunches to make, homework to do and a ton of activities), or when they’re off school (but when they’re at home all day and are running around the house).
Ultimately, the best time to renovate is different for everyone. We all have varying schedules so you need to have a serious think about what time of year will be the most convenient, when is the easiest time to get a contractor, the price difference in materials at different times of the year and the timeframe in which you can realistically get your design and plans organized. If you want a professional’s opinion, call us and we can advise you regarding the best timing for you.
